The last sip of summer
The beach parking is free, the boardwalks are quiet, and the water is as warm as it will be all year. September is the Shore's best month, and it is short. Here are eight plans built the way real days go: one ★ anchor that makes the trip, and a few side stops you can drop, or flip before or after, depending on who napped.
Two shapes. A day plan is anchor + lunch + a stroller nap + somewhere to run. An after-nap plan is out the door when they wake, roughly 3 to 7, home by bedtime.

Tent City, before the tents come down This week
114 striped canvas cottages around the Great Auditorium, up since mid-May and gone by mid-September. The lanes are public walkways: look, don't knock. Quiet enough to double as a nap loop if you go earlier.

After Labor Day the $20 gate fee is gone and so are the lifeguards, so stay on the calm bay side. Mule Barn is five minutes back over the bridge, open till 9, patio in warm weather. A 5:30 table sees the sunset out.

Parking is finally easy. The splash pad is closed for the season, which at 3pm in late September is fine; the playground and the boards are not.

Rides and the 1910 carousel run Friday to Sunday through mid-October. Leave at 2:15, ride 3 to 5, let a counter-service pie be dinner. Fifty minutes is the ceiling for an after-nap drive.

The template: one fenced playground where they can run, one grown-up stop two blocks away where they can't do much damage. Carton opens at noon on weekends, 4pm on weekdays. Bring the snack bag.

Aquarium, then the boards
An indoor anchor, so it survives a grey sky. On school days the field trips clear by early afternoon. Rides are weekends-only now, roughly noon to 6, half-price the last two weekends of September. Under-2s are free.

Village buildings and trade demonstrations run Friday to Sunday, 11 to 4 (Fridays free, $5 weekends). Circle Sunday, Oct 25: All Hallows' Eve, trick-or-treating through an 1830s village, crafts and a scavenger hunt, $12 adults, $6 for ages 4 to 10.

A free zoo that keeps landing on best-in-the-country lists, with a toddler playground right outside the gate. Leave by 8. Honest note: the drive home is the second nap.
